The Andre Dubus Award, the Betsy Sholl Award, and the (W)holeness award are all accepting submissions until December 21st 2012!

The Andre Dubus Award and the Betsy Sholl Award are now open for submissions! Please view the pages for each contest (linked at the top of the blog) for all the guidelines.

Note: These contests are open to everyone, not just USM students. There is an entry fee for each piece submitted. The deadline is December 3rd, 2012.

 

CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

We have our first contest for USM students.

The theme for the contest is “Wholeness/Holeness”. Such as this:

Poem

Light      clarity       avocado salad in the morning
after all the terrible things I do how amazing it is
to find forgiveness and love, not even forgiveness
since what is done is done and forgiveness isn’t love
and love is love nothing can ever go wrong
though things can get irritating boring and dispensable
(in the imagination) but not really for love
though a block away you feel distant the mere presence
changes everything like a chemical dropped on a paper
and all thoughts disappear in a strange quiet excitement
I am sure of nothing but this, intensified by breathing

Guidelines:

Submit up to five poems or a short fiction piece of 5,000 words or less. The submissions will be judged by a panel of peers and the winner will receive 500 dollars and an opportunity to read at the Words and Images Journal 2013 release party.

Again, this contest is for USM students only. There is no submission fee. Contest deadline is December 21st 2012.

Announcing…Announcements!

Hello!

My name is Catie Hannigan and I will be the new Publishing Director for Words and Images 2012-2013. I have assembled a outrageously fabulous crew, and we are all stoked to publish a lovely magazine filled with lovely art and prose from lovely people.

There are a few brief announcements to be made, mostly announcing future announcements:

1) Submissions for the 2012-2013 magazine will be open on September 4th 2012, the first day of the Fall semester. In the next few days, we will post a page detailing what we are looking for, however, there are no real guidelines but awesome art and prose.

2) We will announce the contests and deadlines the first week of the fall semester, so please keep an eye out!

Words & Images is looking for a whole lot of staff next year. Many of the student workers here are graduating, making more room for other interested USM students.

If you’d like to learn more about what it means to be part of the W&I team, send us an e-mail, comment, or talk to current Publishing Director, Caroline O’Connor Thomas, and Assistant Director, Michael Frier. They’ll tell you everything you need to know!

Please note that positions are only open to undergraduates currently enrolled at the University of Southern Maine.
