The release of the 2009 issue of Words and Images is right around the corner—May 7, in fact—and to celebrate, we’re hosting a release party. Excited? You’d better be.

The release party will be held at One Longfellow Square on May 7, at 7:30pm. It’s free, all ages, and open to the public. Copies of Words and Images 2009 will be made available for $10 each. What a bargain!
……..The Bands!
It wouldn’t be a party in Portland without local bands, so Words and Images is giving you three: Marie Stella, Huak, and The Scrapes.
……..The Readers!
There will also be a marathon of contributor readings, featuring Mark Melnicove, Melissa Crowe, and plenty of others reading their published poems and excerpts from their published stories. There will also be a small tribute to the late Maine artist Bern Porter.
……..The Miscellaneous!
Words and Images has been published for the last 40 years. Last year marked a turning point for the journal, as it featured work by some pretty well-known local and national writers (Michael Kimball and Kevin Brockmeier, for example), and interviews with important contemporary artists (Jennifer Egan, Todd Field, the National, Richard Russo). This year, the journal features new poems by Adrian Blevins, and a new fiction piece by Elizabeth Searle. The journal also features artwork by Katie Diamond, Ben Bishop, and Benjamin McDorr. We’re excited to make the 2009 issue of Words and Images available. We hope that you love it as well as us.
