Salutations readers, writers and artists. We need your genius!

Words and Images is back for the 2010/11 year.
We remain the student-run literary magazine of the University of Southern Maine. We are still interested in short fiction, poetry, personal essays, memoirs, short dramatic works (screenplays and plays), and visual images of all printable forms.
Here are our submissions and contest guidelines:

Submissions are free and open until December 31st, 2010.

Hard copy submissions will receive priority consideration. Please send to:

All art submissions are limited to three pieces in jpeg form, 300 pixel minimum, and can be submitted to wordsandimagesart@gmail.com.

With all submissions please include a short bio as you would have it appear in print, plus any relevant contact information.

We are also sponsoring three contests this year:
the Andre Dubus Award in short fiction; the Betsy Sholl Award in poetry; and the Words and Images Cover Award, a competition for a visual piece to be featured on the cover.

  1. Please clarify if you are still accepting hard copies of prose/poetry which, as you indicated above, get priority, or if you only accept submissions by e-mail. Thanks.

    Confused in Westport.

  2. Going by your Submissions Guidelines page, it says “no longer accepting hard copy submissions” so I figured that means you still accept electronic submissions, is that right?

  3. Words and Images

Sorry for the confusion – we’ve updated our submissions guidelines so that they match this post!
